虚無僧尺八の演奏会『古典尺八演奏会 風韻賛歌』が11月9日に開催されます。江戸時代の虚無僧は、解脱を目指す禅の修行として「本曲」と呼ばれる尺八の独奏曲を吹いていました。この演奏会は、竹管内に「地」と呼ばれる砥の粉等のパテ状のものを盛って、その上から漆を塗りフルートのようにツルツルに加工して西洋楽器化した「現代尺八」とは異なり、江戸時代に虚無僧が吹いていた尺八と同じ作りの、竹管をくり抜いて指孔を開けただけの「地無し尺八」で吹かれる本曲を聴くことができる貴重な機会で、虚無僧 流水、流禅も出演します。日本独自の伝統音楽に関心がある方は、是非、お越しください。

A free Komuso Shakuhachi concert, “Classical Shakuhachi Concert: The pieces praising the sound of the wind” will be held on November 9th. During the Edo period, komuso monks played shakuhachi solo pieces called “honkyoku” as part of their Zen training, striving for enlightenment. This concert offers a rare opportunity to hear honkyoku played on the jinashi shakuhachi, the shakuhachi made simply by hollowing out a bamboo tube with finger holes. Unlike the “modern shakuhachi” (Western-style instrument) that uses a putty-like substance called “ji,” such as whetstone powder, and then coated with lacquer to create a smooth, flute-like finish, this is the same shakuhachi played by komuso monks during the Edo period. Komuso Ryusui and Ryuzen will also be performing. If you’re interested in traditional Japanese music, this concert is a must-see.
