
早いものでひと月近く経ってしまいましたが、先月、奥田敦也師の禅茶房主催の竹採り会に参加しました。竹採り会は、自分で地無し延べ管尺八を作るために長野の竹林に入って真竹を根から掘って採ってくる活動で、11月に採った竹を翌年の5月に歌口を削り指孔を開けて製管します。
日本よりも海外の方が尺八熱は高く、例年、海外からの参加者が半数近くを占めますが、4年ぶりに開催された今回も、アメリカやカナダ、ベトナムからも参加して、総勢20名以上で久しぶりに真竹を掘ってきました。
また、今回の竹採り会を通じて、本曲を吹く吹き手の姿勢について改めて思い知らされるところがありました。例年、夜の宴会の際に、参加者は各々持参した尺八で本曲を吹くのですが、今思えば私は、最も得意な二尺八寸管で短めの本曲を吹くことで「大過なく」その場をやりすごそうと「一二三調 鉢返」を吹き、奥田敦也師以外はほとんど誰も気付かなかったのかもしれませんが、自分の中では思いがけず、意表を突かれるような形で手酷く一節を間違えたのです。
竹我一如(ちくがいちにょ)。目を閉じて、ただただ自らが吹く竹音のみに向き合う中で、尺八を聴いている人々も尺八を吹く自らも消え去り、ただ一音一音に集中し没入し続けること。この本曲への向き合い方によってのみ、尺八を吹く、或いは聴く一音によって解脱に至ることを表した言葉と云われる「一音成仏(いっとんじょうぶつ)」の境地が達せられる。そして、この境地に到達するために、譜面を捨てても本曲を自在に吹けるようになるまで、そして没入するに足る音色が出せるようになるまで繰り返し本曲を吹き込むこと。大切なのはこれだけなのだと、ようやく体感として思い至った次第です。
Last month, I participated in a bamboo harvest(picking) event hosted by Master Atsuya Okuda’s Zensabo. The Bamboo Harvest Party is an activity in which people go into the bamboo forests of Nagano to dig up and get bamboo from the root in order to make their own shakuhachi by themselves. The bamboo harvested in November is made to jinashi-shakuhachi in May of the following year.
The fever to Shakuhachi is higher overseas than in Japan, and in normal years, nearly half of the participants are from overseas, and this time, held for the first time in four years, there were also participants from the United States, Canada, and Vietnam. More than 20 people went harvesting madake for the first time in a while.
Also, through this bamboo harvesting event, I was once again reminded of the attitude of the performers who blow shakuhachi. Every year, during the evening banquet, each participant blows honkyoku(the classic pieces of shakuhachi). I blew a shorter version of honkyoku by 2.8 shakuhachi, which is my best skill. In order to get through the situation without any trouble, I blew Hifumicho Hachigaeshi'', and almost no one noticed except for the master Okuda, but in my mind,I unexpectedly made a terrible mistake . Chikuga-ichinyo. By closing your eyes and focusing solely on the notes you are blowing, the people listening to the shakuhachi and yourself playing the shakuhachi disappear, and you simply focus on each note and immerse yourself. Only by this attitude and the way you approach this piece can you reach the state of
Itton-jobutsu”, a phrase that is said to represent the attainment of enlightenment by blowing or listening to a single note of shakuhachi. And in order to reach this state, keep playing honkyoku over and over until you can blow it freely even if you throw away the sheet music, and until you can blow a tone that is enough to immerse yourself. I realized that this is the only thing that is important.
