禅を聴く夜。
解脱を目指す禅の修行として江戸時代の虚無僧が吹いていた尺八の独奏曲である古典本曲（ほんきょく）を、当時の尺八と同じ作りの「地無し（じなし）尺八」で吹く演奏会です。
江戸末期から明治以降に作られ始め、現在、主流となっている尺八は、竹管の内側に地（じ）と呼ばれる砥の粉（とのこ）や砥の粉と石膏等を混ぜ合わせたパテ状のものを盛り、その上から漆（うるし）を塗ってツルツルに加工した「地盛り管（じもりかん）」或いは「地塗り管」と呼ばれる尺八です。他の楽器との合奏のために完全調律され、大きな澄んだ音が出しやすいこの地盛り管は云わば西洋楽器化された尺八で、「現代尺八」とも呼ばれています。
それに対して、江戸時代まで吹かれていた尺八は、真竹をくり貫いて孔（あな）を開け、地を盛らないままの「地無し管（じなしかん）」と呼ばれる複雑な夾雑音を含み込んだ竹本来の響きを活かした尺八で、流浪の乞食増や戦国時代の敗残兵等を源流とし、総てを失った後に尺八による禅の悟道を追究した虚無僧たちの「吹禅（すいぜん）」にふさわしいものであったと考えられます。
現代の尺八奏者が吹いている尺八のほとんどは西洋楽器化された「現代尺八」であり、虚無僧が吹いていた「地無し尺八」による本曲を聴く機会はほとんどなくなってしまっているのが現状です。
「地無し尺八」の第一人者である奥田敦也師の禅茶房門下の虚無僧 流水、流禅、虚禅の、かつて虚無僧たちが吹いた地無し尺八による竹音を聴きに、是非、お気軽にお越しください。

An Evening of Listening to Zen.
This concert features “koten honkyoku”—solo pieces originally played by Komuso Monks during the Edo period as a form of Zen practice aimed at spiritual liberation. The performances utilize the “jinashi-shakuhachi” (unlined bamboo flute), crafted using the same traditional methods as those used in the past.
The shakuhachi that became the mainstream type—emerging from the late Edo period through the Meiji era—is known as a “jimori-kan” (lined-bore flute). Its interior is coated with a paste-like mixture (often “tonoko” powder or a blend of tonoko and gypsum) known as “ji”, which is then lacquered and polished to a smooth finish. Designed for ensemble performance with other instruments, this type offers precise tuning and produces a loud, clear tone; it is essentially a “Westernized” version of the instrument, often referred to as “modern *shakuhachi”.
In contrast, the shakuhachi played until the Edo period was the “jinashi-kan” (unlined-bore flute). Created simply by hollowing out “madake”（Native Japanese bamboo） and drilling finger holes—without adding any internal lining—it preserves the instrument’s natural resonance, including the complex, organic overtones inherent in the bamboo itself. Its origins lie with wandering mendicants and defeated samurai from the Warring States period; it was the instrument of choice for komuso monks who had lost everything and dedicated themselves to “Suizen” (blowing Zen), a practice of pursuing Zen enlightenment through the shakuhachi. Today, however, the vast majority of players use the Westernized “modern shakuhachi”, making opportunities to hear honkyoku performed on the traditional “jinashi-shakuhachi” exceedingly rare.
We invite you to join us and experience the authentic bamboo tones of the “jinashi-shakuhachi”—the very sound once played by the komuso monks—performed by Ryusui, Ryuzen, and Kozen. These musicians are disciples of Atsuya Okuda, a leading master of the “jinashi-shakuhachi” and the founder of the Zensabo school. Please feel free to attend.

The Komuso Monks trace their origins to itinerant mendicant monks and defeated warriors of the Sengoku period who played the shakuhachi outdoors to receive alms. They performed solo shakuhachi pieces known as honkyoku as a form of Zen practice aimed at attaining enlightenment.
On Thursday, July 23, 2026, starting at 7:00 PM, the Komuso Ryusui × Sabihachi Unit will perform at the machine-based live event “Sekifuion.” “Sekifuion” is an electronic improvisation event centered on modular synthesizers and grooveboxes; this edition features a collaboration between Komuso-style shakuhachi and modular synthesizers, evoking the profound abyss that lies between sound and silence.
