虚無僧装束で天蓋をかぶって本曲を吹く際は、激しいメリカリやユリは難しいため、自ずと抑制の効いた吹き方になる。また、天蓋をかぶって立ったまま吹くには、尺八の長さにも自ずと制約が生じ、江戸時代の日本人の平均身長を鑑みると、一尺八寸が限界であったのだろうと思われる。

When blowing honkyoku while wearing a komuso costume and wearing a canopy, it is difficult to play intense meri-kari and yuri, so you naturally have to play in a restrained manner. Also, blowing while standing wearing a canopy naturally limits the length of the shakuhachi, and considering the average height of Japanese people in the Edo period, I think that about 1.8 was the limit.
