「打波」は、文字通り、打ち寄せる波を表している、或いは禅寺の合図に打ち鳴らされる大太鼓の音を表しているとも云われています。
しかし、私には、無宿の薦僧（こもそう）や戦に敗れた敗残兵を源流とする虚無僧の、日本の中世期における戦乱の記憶が刻み込まれているように感じられます。当時の戦は、雑兵（ぞうひょう）たちが収奪と人さらいを繰り返し、「七度の飢饉よりも一度の戦（いくさ）（七度の飢餓にあうとも、一度の戦にあうな）」と云われた程、凄惨なものであったと云われています。
It is said that “Daha” literally represents the crashing of waves, or the sound of a large drum beaten as a signal at Zen temples.
However, I feel that it reflects the memories of wars in medieval Japan. The wars of that time were so brutal that infantry repeatedly plundered and kidnapped people, and it was said that “seven famines is better than one war (you can suffer seven famines, but not one war).”
