「手向」は死者を弔う曲と云われています。
虚無僧は、薦僧(こもそう)と呼ばれた無宿の乞食僧や戦に敗れた敗残兵などを源流とし、彼らが生み出し今日まで吹き継がれてきた本曲は、禅宗の影響を強く受けて禅の悟道を表すとともに、彼等が間近に見た凄惨な死を、ついえ去った数多くの夢を弔った曲とも云えると思います。

The origins of Komuso lie in homeless beggar monks called komoso and soldiers defeated in battle, and these classical pieces of shakuhachi called “honkyoku”, which they created and has been blown to this day, was strongly influenced by Zen Buddhism and represents the path to Zen enlightenment. It can also be said to be a pieces to mourn the horrific deaths they have witnessed up close and the many dreams that have passed away.
